Security IOC alert for Linux/VPS administratorsWe have identified the same previously undocumented-looking Linux malware/persistence pattern on 4 of 6 VPS servers during an incident investigation.
Observed indicators:
• systemd service: httpdconfchecker.service
• executable: /usr/sbin/httpdconfchecker
• fake Apache binary: /usr/bin/apache
• execution: /usr/bin/apache --config=/dev/shm/httpd.json
• fake Apache binary identified internally as XMRig 6.26.0
• downloader observed contacting:
https://d4.appdeploy.online/cx.gz
• suspicious root SSH authorized-key comment:

One affected system showed the service being created on 2026-09-05 at approximately 22:13 CEST.
If you administer Linux VPSes, please check for:
systemctl status httpdconfchecker
ls -l /usr/sbin/httpdconfchecker /usr/bin/apache
grep -R "httpdconfchecker" /etc/systemd/system
and inspect /root/.ssh/authorized_keys for unfamiliar keys.
We are reporting the samples and IOCs to the hosting provider and malware-analysis platforms. The common initial-access vector is still under investigation.
Please share if you observe the same indicators so the campaign can be mapped quickly.

YARA Signatures
MalwareBazaar uses YARA rules from several public and non-public repositories, such as YARAhub and Malpedia. Those are being matched against malware samples uploaded to MalwareBazaar as well as against any suspicious process dumps they may create. Please note that only results from TLP:CLEAR rules are being displayed.
