SUBJECT: Malware Analysis Request (Trojan.Win64.UACBypass / Loader)

1. SOURCE AND ATTACK VECTOR
The file was received via email (a phishing campaign requesting that the recipient execute the attachment).

2. STATIC CHARACTERISTICS (PE64)
- File type: PE32+ executable (console/GUI) x86-64, for MS Windows.
- Compiler: MinGW-w64 (GCC: (tdm64-1) 10.3.0), with static linking of libstdc++ and winpthreads.
- Manifest: requestedExecutionLevel level="asInvoker" (intended to suppress the standard UAC prompt upon startup).
- Compilation timestamp (TimeDateStamp): 0x6ABA9E91.

3. BEHAVIORAL ANALYSIS AND MALICIOUS LOGIC
The sample implements a classic UAC bypass chain (UAC Bypass Method #41 / ICMLuaUtil), incorporating a preliminary process environment manipulation technique (PEB Masquerading):

Step 1 (Binding to an interactive session):
Dynamically resolves the functions OpenWindowStationW, SetProcessWindowStation, OpenDesktopW, and SetThreadDesktop from user32.dll, and binds the process to "WinSta0\Default". Step 2 (Bypassing Windows Security Mechanisms / Process Masquerading):
To circumvent the trusted process check when invoking an elevated COM object, the malware:
- Locates the "explorer.exe" process on the system using obfuscated calls to `CreateToolhelp32Snapshot`, `Process32FirstW`, `Process32NextW`, and `QueryFullProcessImageNameW`.
- Accesses its own process's PEB (Process Environment Block) structure directly (via the `gs:[0x60]` register), calls `RtlAcquirePebLock` (from `ntdll.dll`), overwrites the `ImagePathName` and `CommandLine` fields within the `RTL_USER_PROCESS_PARAMETERS` structure with the path to the system's "C:\Windows\explorer.exe", and subsequently calls `RtlReleasePebLock`.

Step 3 (Exploiting UAC Bypass via COM Moniker):
The malware decrypts the following moniker string in memory:
"Elevation:Administrator!new:{3E5FC7F9-9A51-4367-9063-A120244FBEC7}" (CLSID CMSTPLUA)
and invokes `CoGetObject` using the `IID_ICMLuaUtil` interface (`{6EDD6D74-C007-4E75-B76A-E5740995E24C}`). Through the `ShellExec` virtual table method (at offset `0x48`), it relaunches itself—or an argument provided via the command line—with full Administrator privileges (High Integrity) without triggering a UAC prompt. 4. CRYPTOGRAPHY / OBFUSCATION
All sensitive strings and imported API names located in the .rdata section are encrypted using a custom stream algorithm:
plain[i] = ((i * 0xD7 + 0x29) & 0xFF) ^ cipher[i] ^ 0xA0 (where i starts at 1).

Decrypted IOCs (strings in memory):
- "Elevation:Administrator!new:{3E5FC7F9-9A51-4367-9063-A120244FBEC7}"
- "RtlAcquirePebLock" / "RtlReleasePebLock"
- "ntdll.dll", "ole32.dll", "kernel32.dll", "advapi32.dll"
- "explorer.exe"
- "CoInitializeEx", "CoGetObject", "CoUninitialize"
- "CreateToolhelp32Snapshot", "Process32FirstW", "Process32NextW", "QueryFullProcessImageNameW"
- "CreateFileW", "DeleteFileW", "GetFileAttributesW", "ExpandEnvironmentStringsW", "GetWindowsDirectoryW", "TerminateProcess", "ReadFile", "WriteFile"

5. MITRE ATT&CK MATRIX MAPPING
- T1548.002: Abuse Elevation Control Mechanism: Bypass User Account Control (CMSTPLUA COM interface).
- T1036.004 / T1036.005: Masquerading (PEB ImagePathName spoofing as explorer.exe).
- T1027: Obfuscated Files or Information (Custom XOR-LCG string encryption).
- T1106: Native API (Direct PEB walk & dynamic API resolution).

YARA Signatures

MalwareBazaar uses YARA rules from several public and non-public repositories, such as YARAhub and Malpedia. Those are being matched against malware samples uploaded to MalwareBazaar as well as against any suspicious process dumps they may create. Please note that only results from TLP:CLEAR rules are being displayed.
