YARA Signatures

MalwareBazaar uses YARA rules from several public and non-public repositories, such as YARAhub and Malpedia. Those are being matched against malware samples uploaded to MalwareBazaar as well as against any suspicious process dumps they may create. Please note that only results from TLP:CLEAR rules are being displayed.

Family: Ancient (Malpedia elf.ancient, aka ANCT). The core is Mirai-derived, which is why Mirai signatures fire, but it is a distinct bot with its own C2 layer (ANCT handshake, C2 name resolved over DNS-over-TLS). This x86-64 build was served from hxxp://89.163.157[.]131:8080/x86_64 and is installed by the Ancient persist.sh dropper. It matches our YARA rule Linux_Ancient_Bot (YARAhub), which keys on the bot's persistence modules (home_persist, cron_deb, android_rc, rc_local, the sysd init script and sys.service unit). The rule matches all nine x86-64 and ARMv7 builds from this server and none of ~260 recent Mirai, Gafgyt and Mozi samples.
